June - Nanaimo Rowers Bring Home Medals
Seven
Nanaimo rowers brought home medals from the 65th annual Canadian Secondary
School Rowing Association regatta held in St. Catharines, ON from June 4-6.
Rowers Evan Earp-Jones and Daniel Cameron are current Nanaimo Rowing Club
members and were representing Dover Bay Secondary at the regatta. They were
accompanied by Nanaimo coach, Craig Rutherford. Past Nanaimo Rowing Club
members included Martin Barakso, Andrew Crowley, Evan Marback and Connor
McGuigan representing Brentwood College School in Mill Bay and Arden Gill
representing Shawnigan Lake School.
Earp-Jones and Cameron brought home silver in the Senior Mens Pair event with a time of 7:19.32, 5.26 seconds out of first place. They also competed in the Senior Mens doubles but were knocked out in the semi-finals.
Barakso brought home gold in the Junior Mens Single with a winning time of 7:49.33, 10 seconds ahead of second place. Along with Crowley, Marback, and McGuigan, he also won silver in the Senior Mens Eight. Crowley, Marback and McGuigan added to the medal count with a bronze in the Senior Mens Four.
Gill collected gold in the Senior Womens Double and bronze in the Senior Womens Quad.
These same rowers also competed in the Rowing Canada Junior National Team trials on June 7-8 in Welland, ON. The trials featured the largest number of entries ever for a Canadian junior trials with more than 100 athletes. Rowers were competing for a spot on the team going to the Junior World Championships in Racice, Czech Republic in early August and the CanAmMex junior regatta in the U.S. this summer. More information on the team structure will be announced later this week.
Once again the Nanaimo rowers had some impressive results despite some weather challenges on the first day. Barakso was second in the A final of the Mens Single race and Gill was first in the B final of the Womens Single race. The remainder of the Nanaimo rowers competed in the Mens Pair race. Marback and McGuigan were fourth in the A final, Crowley and partner Ben Coull were 5th in the A final and Earp-Jones and Cameron were fifth in the B final. Earp-Jones and Cameron were in fifth place out of 16 pairs after the time trials but couldn't compete with the wind in the semi-finals.
